Welcome back to Schiphol: Do I need to go into quarantine?

We are only just starting to enjoy the freedom to travel again, and so the idea of having to go into quarantine is the last thing on our minds. This, however, is unavoidable if you travel to Schiphol from a very high-risk area. The Dutch government requires people returning from countries that have been added to the list of very high-risk countries and areas to go into quarantine for ten days. This is considered a necessary step in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

When do I need to go into quarantine?

You must immediately go into quarantine for 10 days after landing at Schiphol. This means staying at home or at your accommodation for 10 days and refraining from going outside. Sitting in your garden or on the balcony is allowed, but doing the grocery shopping or receiving visitors is not. This is only necessary if you travel to the Netherlands from a very high-risk area. You can see a list of the countries and areas that have been classified as very high risk on the Dutch government website. If the country or area you are returning from is on this list, you must go into quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in the Netherlands. Mandatory quarantine also applies to travellers with proof of vaccination or proof of recovery from COVID-19.

Could the travel advice change during my trip?

Absolutely. Travel advice is constantly being reviewed and, where necessary, tightened up. It is therefore possible that the travel advice for the country you are visiting changes while you are there. We recommend you visit the Dutch government website before you fly (back) to Schiphol to check if the country or area you are visiting has been classified as very high risk while you have been away. If that is the case, you will be required to go into quarantine for 10 days after you return, even if this rule did not apply at some point earlier on in your trip.

Do I need to fill in a quarantine declaration?

If you are travelling to the Netherlands from a country or area that has been classified as very high risk, you need to fill in a quarantine declaration. Download the quarantine declaration, print it out and then complete and sign it. You can also use the digital form at quarantinedeclaration.government.nl. Your airline can ask to see this declaration or request that you hand it in. You therefore need to have a printed quarantine declaration with you throughout your journey.

We ask you to say goodbye or greet each other outside. So there is enough space for travellers to keep a distance of 1.5 metres inside Departures and Arrivals.

  • Do I need to get tested before I fly?

At Schiphol we maintain 1.5 metres distance from each other. That can be difficult at some locations, which is why we ask you to wear a face mask there.
