Construction of the new high-voltage substation on the green strip between Schiphol Boulevard and the Westelijke Randweg started in January 2024. Thanks to this station, Schiphol will soon gain extra capacity on the power grid. From 2027, the station will supply electricity to buildings including the terminal and various offices at the airport.

The high-voltage substation is an important step towards our ambition for 2030: ensuring that all our own buildings at the airport are off natural gas and that we can connect our electrical equipment. To make this development possible, Schiphol and Liander are joining forces for the construction and management of the station.
The design is not a standard high-voltage substation. The buildings are integrated into the landscape under a green dome, covered with a mix of small trees, shrubs and herbs. Together with the adjacent water storage, this creates extra space for biodiversity and nature. Thanks to this green finish, the station will blend into the surroundings like a gentle hill. It will be a robust, future-proof power source with a lifespan of 40 to 60 years.
At construction started in January 2024. This includes laying a 10kV underground cable network so that sufficient power can be supplied. We expect construction to be completed in 2027.
