Nijntje

Miffy is the best known and most popular of the characters in Dick Bruna's books worldwide. In the Netherlands she’s called 'nijntje', which is derived from the Dutch word for rabbit (konijn).

Freddy Heineken

Alfred Heineken (1923-2002) was one of the Netherlands' most successful entrepreneurs. He turned his grandfather's company into the beer empire we know today.

Wubbo Ockels

Wubbo Ockels (1946-2014) was an astronaut, physicist, pilot and professor. In 1985, Wubbo Ockels was the first Dutchman to make a flight through space.

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch painter. His work was not noticed by the general public until after his death, after which Van Gogh and his work became world-famous.

Anne Frank

Anne Frank (1929 -1945) was a Jewish girl who became world-famous for the diary she wrote during World War II while in hiding in Amsterdam.

Joop Zoetemelk

Joop Zoetemelk (1946) is a Dutch former cyclist and one of the best Dutch touring cyclists ever. Among other things, he won the Tour de France in 1980.

Girl with a Pearl Earring

Girl with a pearl earring is a painting from around 1665-1667 by Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. It has become his most popular painting.

Johan Cruijff

Johan Cruijff (1947 -2016) was a Dutch professional football player and football coach. He is recognised worldwide as one of the best football players of all time.

Willem van Oranje

William van Oranje (1533 - 1584) is also known as 'Father of the Fatherland'. He played a key role in the Eighty Years' War and is considered the founder of a new Dutch state.

André Rieu

André Rieu (1949) is a Dutch violinist and orchestral conductor whose performances of popular classical works are known to a wide audience around the world.

Fanny Blankers-Koen

Fanny Blankers-Koen (1918 -2004) was a Dutch athlete. Among others, she won four gold medals at the 1948 London Olympics.

Harry Mulisch

Harry Mulisch (1927 -2010) was a Dutch writer. He is counted among "The Big Three" of post-war Dutch literature.

Aletta Jacobs

Aletta Jacobs (1854 - 1929) was a Dutch physician and women's suffrage activist. As the first woman officially to attend a Dutch university, she became one of the first female physicians in the Netherlands. Thanks to Jacobs, women were allowed to vote for the first time in 1922.

Anton de Kom

Anton de Kom (1898 - 1945) was an anti-colonial thinker, writer, poet, human rights activist and resistance fighter. His best-known work is the 1934 book 'We slaves of Suriname'.

Rembrandt van Rijn

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669) is one of the most famous Dutch masters of the seventeenth century. Besides portraits, he painted many history paintings and made etchings and drawings.

Annie M.G. Schmidt

Annie M.G. Schmidt (1911 -1995) was a Dutch poet and writer of verses, songs, books, plays, musicals and radio and television drama. She became especially famous with several children's books.

Sven Kramer

Sven Kramer (1986) is one of the best Dutch speed skaters of all time. Among other things, he has captured nine medals at four different Olympic Games.

Martin Garrix

Martin Garrix, stage name of Martijn Gerard Garritsen (1996), is a Dutch disc jockey and music producer. In 2024, he was named the world's best DJ for the 5th time.

Jeroen Krabbé

Jeroen Krabbé (1944) is a Dutch actor, film director, painter and illustrator. Krabbé is best known internationally as a villain, for example from: Prince of Tides (1991), The Fugitive (1993) and as the villain Georgi Koskov in the James Bond film The Living Daylights (1987).

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen (1997) is a Dutch-Belgian racing driver. He drives under the Dutch flag in Formula 1. In 2021, Verstappen became the first ever Dutch Formula 1 world champion. In 2022, 2023 and 2024 he prolonged this title.

Bibian Mentel

Bibian Mentel (1972 - 2021) was a Dutch snowboarder. She became Dutch champion six times in the halfpipe event and seven times Dutch snowboard cross champion, the last time after amputation of her right leg.

Mies Bouwman

Mies Bouwman (1929 - 2018) was a Dutch television presenter. During her lifetime, she was considered a TV icon in the Netherlands.

Rutger Hauer

Rutger Hauer (1944 - 2019) was a Dutch actor who worked mainly in the United States since the 1980s. The film awards he won include a Golden Globe and two Golden Calfs.

Reinier Paping

Reinier Paping (1931 –2021) was a Dutch speedskater primarily known as the winner of the Elfstedentocht of 1963. This Elfstedentocht became known as "The hell of '63" when only 69 of the 9,292 contestants were able to finish the race, due to the extremely low temperatures, dipping to −18 °C, and a harsh eastern wind. After winning the race, he was recognized as a national hero in the Netherlands.

Harrie Lavreysen

Harrie Lavreysen (born 1997) is a Dutch track cyclist. With five Olympic titles, among others, he is the most successful Dutch participant in the Summer Games in history.

Sifan Hassan

Sifan Hassan (1993) is a Dutch athlete of Ethiopian descent, specialising in middle and long distances. She participated in the Olympics three times and became Olympic champion three times. In 2024, she became the first Dutch world athlete of the year.
