Good news: the renovation of Lounge 1 at Schiphol is almost complete! We have worked very hard over the past few years to renew the lounge, which was in great need of a makeover after 20 years of use. Here are six highlights that are not to be missed.
The biggest eyecatcher in Lounge 1? You can't miss it! In the middle of the lounge, 300,000 LED lights with a total length of 8 kilometres form an authentic Dutch cloudscape, based on a painting by master painter Jacob van Ruisdael. The adjacent decorative piece flows seamlessly into it, with the birds appearing to fly straight into the cloudy sky.
This area also features the first shop opened by our new brand, Today Duty Free. At 1,500 square metres, the new retail concept's flagship store is the largest at Schiphol. Here you'll find a surprising range of products, competitive prices, and personalised service. Thanks to over 350 specially trained staff, personal attention is paramount. And how about the tasting bar and self-checkouts? It's well worth a visit.
Not only has the lounge been completely revamped, but you'll also find new shops and new offerings. You can unwind in the very first airport Mind Oasis by Rituals Cosmetics, for example. Or enjoy the tastiest French classics and local specialties at LOAF or authentic Italian dishes from Eataly, which has opened its very first branch in the Netherlands in Lounge 1. And Starbucks is back. In the very spot where it first set foot on Dutch soil in 2007, this coffee giant offers over 500 square metres of high-quality coffee experience with a local flair, inspired by the city of Amsterdam.
Did you know that part of the lounge is an architectural masterpiece? We not only added part of the Crew Centre to the lounge, but also the Cockpitplein. Some of the new lounge therefore literally used to be outdoor space. The aim of all these extensions was to create additional room for more comfort and seating areas. And with 5,000 square metres of extra floor space and 207 extra seats, we think we have done a very good job.
Transfers have become a real treat thanks to the new transfer cluster. It consists of two sections: T2 for KLM passengers and T3 for other airlines. The curtain surrounding the counter is a real eye-catcher, containing an impressive 931,000 chain links. Another special feature is the area next to the transfer desk. This belongs to the adjacent catering area, but we can add it to the transfer cluster when it gets very busy.
Do you still have some time to relax before your flight? Take a seat in one of the lounge's seating areas. To enhance the natural ambiance, we've introduced several trees. The tallest is a whopping 6 metres! These fishtail palms (caryota mitis), specially cultivated in the Netherlands, are commonly found in Southeast Asia. They absorb 90 litres of water per month, which they then release back into the room. This contributes to a pleasant climate in the lounge.
