Runway availability: Runway maintenance and works in 2020/2021

To keep the six runways and the taxiways at Schiphol safe and in good condition, we regularly perform maintenance and other works on and around them. The runways are often unavailable for air traffic while the works are being carried out. Deploying other runways means that there will be consequences for runway use and air traffic. And this can mean that you, as our neighbour, see and hear more or fewer aircraft overhead. On this page you can see what works are being done and which runways have limited or no availability.

Current and upcoming works

25 January – 14 May: major maintenance Polderbaan Runway

The Polderbaan Runway will undergo major maintenance and will not be in use between 25 January and 14 May. This will have an impact on aircraft noise in the area. Throughout this period, air traffic coming from the north will land day and night on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway when there’s a southerly wind. While this maintenance is being carried out, the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will not always be available as a runway for take-off in a northerly direction. This is because the taxiways and entry routes to the south of this runway are unavailable. During the day, air traffic will therefore, if possible, take-off from the Zwanenburgbaan Runway in the event of a northerly wind - this depends on circumstances such as the amount of traffic, the composition of the traffic and the weather - or from Buitenveldertbaan Runway. For night flights during this period an exemption has been requested for take-off from the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. At night, the Kaagbaan Runway may be used occasionally as a runway for take-off towards the northeast in the event of strong north-easterly wind.

Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) will replace the Polderbaan Runway’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) as part of this major maintenance. An ILS assists airplanes in making a gradual descent towards the runways. Some of the maintenance that needs to be done on the ILS can only be carried out once the main works have been completed. For up to six weeks after the completion of this maintenance, the Polderbaan Runway and the Zwanenburgbaan Runway – due to works on the runway itself and the taxiways (31 May – 21 June) – cannot be used as runways for landing in all visibility conditions. As a result, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway and Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway might be used more often when there’s a southerly wind.

31 May – 21 June: maintenance Zwanenburgbaan Runway

The Zwanenburgbaan Runway will be undergoing maintenance from 31 May to 21 June. While this is going on, air traffic will use the Kaagbaan and Buitenveldertbaan runways more frequently for both take-off and landing.

31 May – 21 June: works on taxiways near Zwanenburgbaan Runway

From 31 May to 21 June, we’ll be continuing works on the Zulu, Alfa and Bravo taxiways to the west of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. These taxiways are being raised so that they can join up with the new taxiway that will span across the A4 motorway. Air traffic will consequently not be able to use these taxiways. This will affect Zwanenburgbaan Runway use during the day. At peak times, the Buitenveldertbaan or Schiphol-Oostbaan runways might be used more frequently as a second runway for landing when there is a southerly wind. The Buitenveldertbaan Runway might also be used more often as a second runway for take-off when there is a northerly wind.

12 July – 25 July: maintenance Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway

At the start of the summer holiday, the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway will not be available due to maintenance. This will have a limited impact on major air traffic, since this runway is typically only used for the smaller business and private planes. However, for safety reasons, the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway might be deployed in the event of a strong south-westerly wind. The smaller aircraft will use other runways while these works are going on.

6 September – 20 September: maintenance Buitenveldertbaan Runway

The Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be undergoing maintenance between 6 and 20 September. Throughout this period, we expect that the Aalsmeerbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways will be deployed more for departing and landing aircraft.

27 September – 10 October: maintenance Aalsmeerbaan Runway

The Aalsmeerbaan Runway will not be in use between 27 September and 10 October due to maintenance. During this period, the aircraft that would usually take off from or land on this runway will use the Kaagbaan and Buitenveldertbaan runways instead.

11 October – 17 October: maintenance works Kaagbaan Runway

The Kaagbaan Runway will be undergoing maintenance for one week in October and will therefore not be in use. As a result, we expect that more aircraft will land on the Aalsmeerbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways this week. We will deploy the Aalsmeerbaan, Buitenveldertbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways for departing air traffic.

While this maintenance is being carried out on the Kaagbaan Runway, Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) will be replacing its Instrument Landing System (ILS). An ILS assists airplanes in making a gradual descent towards the runways. Some of the maintenance that needs to be done on the ILS can only be carried out once the main works have been completed.. A consequence of this is that the Kaagbaan Runway cannot be used as a runway for landing in all visibility conditions for several weeks after the maintenance has been completed. This means that the Aalsmeerbaan Runway and Zwanenburgbaan Runway can be used more frequently for landings.

Previous works

1 February - 26 April: works on taxiways near the Zwanenburgbaan Runway

From 1 February to 26 April, taxiways Quebec, Zulu, Alfa and Bravo to the south of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will be unavailable due to works in connection with the construction of a second lane on taxiway Quebec. All four taxiways need to be raised in order for them to join up with the viaduct that is being built over the A4 motorway. This will affect Zwanenburgbaan Runway use during the day. Also because these works coincide with major maintenance work on the Polderbaan, daytime air traffic will take off from the Buitenveldertbaan in the event of northerly wind. This will affect aircraft noise in the area.

20 January – 22 January: Zwanenburgbaan Runway unavailable due to works

The Zwanenburgbaan Runway will not be available from Wednesday morning 20 January 07.00 to Friday evening 22 January 18.00. During this period, work will be carried out on the lighting and exits to the southwest of the runway. This is to be prepared for major maintenance on the Polderbaan Runway (starting 25 January). The Buitenveldertbaan Runway can be used as second runway during peak moments in this period. The Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway can also be used as a second runway during a landing peak. Which runway will actually be used during this period will depend on wind and weather conditions.

18 January – 20 January: Polderbaan Runway unavailable due to preparations

Due to preparatory activities for major maintenance on the Polderbaan Runway (starting 25 January), the Polderbaan Runway will be out of use from Monday morning 18 January 7:00 until Wednesday morning 20 January 7:00. We expect this to have an effect on aircraft noise in the area. During this work, air traffic will take off from and land on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway in a northerly direction. the Buitenveldertbaan Runway can be used as second runway during peak moments. Due to weather conditions, the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway may also be used as a second runway during a landing peak. At night, when there is a north wind, the Kaagbaan Runway may occasionally be used as a take-off runway in a north-easterly direction.

22 November – 26 January: works in connection with Quebec project

Because of the works being carried out to make Quebec a dual taxiway - which includes a new viaduct over the A4 motorway - taxiways Quebec, Zulu and Alfa to the south of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will be unavailable between 22 November and 26 January. These taxiways are used by aircraft to taxi to and from the Polderbaan Runway along the south side of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. While these works are going on, traffic can only taxi along the north side of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway via taxiway Yankee when both the Zwanenburgbaan and Polderbaan runways are being used.

These works can have an effect on aircraft noise in the area. When there’s a southerly wind, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway or Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway can be used more frequently as a second runway for landing at peak times. When there’s a northerly wind, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway can be deployed more often as a second runway for take-off. The works will not affect runway use at night.

22 November - 26 November Zwanenburgbaan Runway unavailable due to works

Between 22:00 on Sunday the 22nd of November and 06:00 on Thursday the 26th of November, the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will be unavailable for air traffic due to works. We expect this to have an effect on aircraft noise in the area. When there is a southerly or south-westerly wind, aircraft may land on the Buitenveldertbaan Runway. When there is a northerly wind, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway may be used for take-off. Which runway is actually used during this period depends on the wind and weather conditions.

2 November – 7 November Aalsmeerbaan Runway unavailable due to maintenance

Due to annual maintenance, the Aalsmeerbaan Runway will not be used this week. Runway maintenance starts at 07:00 on Monday the 2nd of November and goes on until 19:00 on Saturday the 11th of November. As a result, we expect to use the Buitenveldertbaan Runway more often. The Zwanenburgbaan Runway (southerly direction) may also be used more frequently.

This maintenance on the Aalsmeerbaan Runwas was initially scheduled to take place from 28 September to 6 October, but has been rescheduled to November. The maintenance would otherwise be happening at the same time as the works on taxiways Quebec and Zulu. Because this would have too much of an impact on runway use and therefore on the local area, the maintenance has been postponed.

28 September - 16 October taxiway Quebec and Zulu unavailable due to works

From Monday 28 September 07.00 to Friday 16 October, taxiways Quebec and Zulu will not be used due to works. We may possibly use the Buitenveldertbaan Runway more than usual in these three weeks.

21 September – 26 September Kaagbaan Runway unavailable due to maintenance

The Kaagbaan Runway will be unavailable for almost one week at the end of September due to annual maintenance. We will be doing maintenance work between 07:00 on Monday the 21st of September and 18:00 on Saturday the 26th of September. While the maintenance is carried out, we expect more aircraft to land on the Aalsmeerbaan Runway and the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. For take-off, we will be using the Aalsmeerbaan Runway, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway and the Zwanenburgbaan Runway.

31 Augustus - 8 September Polderbaan Runway unavailable due to maintenance

The Polderbaan Runway will be out of service for annual maintenance works for one week, from Monday morning 31 August 07.00 to Tuesday 8 September 02.00. We expect more air traffic on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway during the works. Landings will be made on Zwanenburgbaan during the night. We will request an exemption for night flights during this period. By doing so, we make sure we don't have to use the Kaagbaan Runway in a northeastern direction during the night, which would otherwise cause a lot of nuisance in Amsterdam and Amstelveen.

17 – 28 August Zwanenburgbaan Runway unavailable due to works

Between the morning of Monday 17th of August (07.00 h) and the afternoon of Friday 28th of August (16.00 h), the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will not be available for air traffic due to works. We expect that this may have an effect on aircraft noise in the area. During this period, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway can be used more frequently as a second runway at peak landing times when there is a southerly or south-westerly wind. The Buitenveldertbaan Runway can be used as a second runway at peak take-off times when there is a northerly wind. Which runway is actually used during this period depends on the wind and weather conditions at the time.

27 – 31 July Zwanenburgbaan Runway has limited availability due to maintenance

From Monday 27th of July to Friday 31st of July, the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will not be used between 14:00 and 23:00 due to maintenance works. We expect this to have little impact on aircraft noise for the residential area as the Zwanenburgbaan Runway has hardly been used these past weeks. Read more about the maintenance works.

28 July Buitenveldertbaan Runway has limited availability due to works

On Tuesday the 28th of July, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will not be used between 07:00 and 14:00. Works are going to be carried out on the runway lighting. We do not expect this to have an effect on aircraft noise in the area.

29 July Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway has limited availability due to works

On Wednesday the 29th of July, the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway will not be available between 07:00 and 15:00 due to the fitting of a wind sock. We do not expect this to have an effect on aircraft noise in the area.
