A day in the life of a social media / PR advisor

When you fly to or from Schiphol, you’ll come across many of the hard-working people that keep the airport running. Cleaners, security officers, baggage handlers, passenger assistants, marshallers, pushback drivers – these colleagues can be spotted all over Schiphol. But some colleagues are less visible; they work behind-the-scenes in the office. For this ‘A day in the life of...’ blog, we spoke to Julien Moinat to get an insight into his job as a social media / PR advisor. From managing Schiphol’s TikTok channel to ensuring that film crews can work in the terminal, there’s never a dull moment in this role!

A varied job

Schiphol is active on various social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, and every day there are posts telling the story of the airport. Most recently, the world has been able to follow Schiphol on TikTok. Julien’s work for the Corporate Affairs department at Schiphol involves making posts for this relatively new online phenomenon. ‘Our TikToks are both fun and informative, and we also like to respond to trends,’ explains Julien. ‘The best thing about my job is the variety,’ he continues. While he may officially have an office job, he’s never there for long. ‘I never spend a whole day in the office, but when I’m there, my tasks range from thinking up new content to issuing photo and film licenses for production companies.’

On set at Schiphol

Social media is only part of Julien’s work at Schiphol. He also helps facilitate photography and film shoots at the airport, which is of course a wonderful location for TV series, documentaries and commercials. ‘Together with my colleague, I make sure that shoots can take place at the airport, that our operation is informed and that the travellers are not affected by the photo and filming activities.’ Just before Christmas, Julien helped with the All You Need Is Love Christmas special, a show in which Schiphol always features prominently (with the famous dancing flight attendants). ‘It turned out to be another wonderful episode, with this year's opening taking place on the runway with Davina Michelle!’

Memorabele momenten

With so much fun stuff going on, it was hard for Julien to pick his most memorable moment at Schiphol. Two events did really stand out though. The first was in April 2023, when the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife Brigitte came to the Netherlands on a state visit. They landed at Schiphol and Julien was there to capture the moment. ‘It was really impressive to see this ceremonial event, to see everything from so close by.’ The second was in October 2023, when Schiphol and Armada Music joined forces for a special livestream with well-known DJs Ferry Corsten and Joris Voorn to kick off Amsterdam Dance Event. ‘It was so cool to see these DJs play sets in one of the old control towers. I’m proud that I was able to be a part of that.’

Julien is one of many colleagues with great stories to tell about their work at the airport. Keep an eye on our social media channels for more blogs about a day in the life of different employees at Schiphol
