Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the transfer desk? Which services does it offer?

Simply follow the ‘Transfer Desk’ signs. Are you flying with a Skyteam member airline (e.g. KLM)? Then check in at T2, T4 or T6. All other airlines can be found at T3, T5 or T9.

At the transfer desk you can:

  • Get a boarding pass for your next flight
  • Change flight details
  • Get assistance if your flight is cancelled or if you missed your flight
  • Search for and book a new ticket

If you are travelling with KLM, you can also use the self-service machines. Follow the instructions on the screen to sort everything out yourself and print your boarding pass.

I have a three hour layover at Schiphol. Will I be able to visit Amsterdam?

Three hours is rather short. We would usually – when coronavirus is not an issue – only advise a trip to Amsterdam if the transfer time is five hours or more (and provided you do not need a visa). Take waiting times at security and passport control into account.

I have lost my passport/my passport has expired. Where can I go to arrange an emergency document?

Go to the Emergency Documents Desk behind check-in desk 8 in departure hall 1.

I lost my passport in the terminal/in a shop. How can I get an announcement made?

You can ask a member of staff to do this by video calling them from a Self Service Unit.

I have found a passport. Where can I hand it in?

Take it to Lost & Found in Lounge 1 or 3, or go to the KMar police office at Schiphol Plaza.

Where can I smoke?

Smoking has been prohibited in the terminal building since April 2020. Transfer passengers wishing to go outside to smoke have to leave the building via baggage reclaim and re-enter through security. This may take a long time and is not always possible if a traveller is not allowed in the Netherlands without a visa. It is the traveller’s responsibility to be on time for the flight.

Can I still buy cigarettes?

Yes, you can buy tobacco products at the airport – at AKO shops and at the big Albert Heijn at Schiphol Plaza.

Where can I use the internet?

There is free wifi at Schiphol. Travellers can use our free of charge network to check their emails and surf the web. Just go to the settings on your mobile and select our free network ‘Airport_Free_Wifi’. You will be automatically connected to this network for four hours. You can still use the free internet after that, you’ll just have to log in again. Questions/problems? Call the helpdesk 020 795 0795.

Where can I make a phone call?

Schiphol no longer has public telephones.

Where can I charge my phone or laptop?

You can find charging points in the tables and seating areas of most food and drink establishments.

Where can I find more information about my flight?

Check the displays for the latest flight information, or use the Schiphol App for more detailed information.

Tip:download the Schiphol App on your mobile phone for flight information and more.

Is there anywhere I can leave my baggage for a couple of hours?

There are baggage lockers in all lounges. You can find a central baggage depot with lockers at Schiphol Plaza, between Departures 1 and 2 on the first floor. If transfer passengers arrive in Lounge 1 and leave from Lounge 2 or 3 (or vice versa), they can be directed to the Kelderplein baggage depot at Schiphol Plaza (open 24/7, phone number: 020 7952 843).

Why do I have to show my boarding pass?

Shopkeepers at Schiphol are required to show the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) which goods have been sold to passengers flying to a destination outside the EU. This is because these goods are duty free. Travellers must show their boarding pass so that we can fulfil our administrative duties.

Where can I get a VAT refund?

In Lounge 3: at the customs office/Global Blue, by the bathroom facilities opposite Pier F

The passenger must have the items on them for inspection. First, they must get a stamp from Customs. Then, the passenger takes the stamped documents to Global Blue/Tax Refund or to the Travelex counter (depending on which tax refund partner the shop where they bought the items from works with).
