News: Swissport Business Class Lounge relocated and revamped

Every cloud has a silver lining. As a result of the redesign of Departure & Lounge 1, the Swissport business class lounge needed a new home. This move also presented us with the opportunity to give the third floor of Terminal 1 a completely new look. On Friday 1 February, our fully renovated Swissport lounge was completed. The lounge opened its doors to customers the following Saturday morning.

Out with the old, in with the new

The place that now hosts the lounge used to be the home of a restaurant called Touchdown. Over a year ago, demolition work kicked off in the area and the redevelopment of Departure & Lounge 1 was on its way. As one of Schiphol’s oldest spots, there were some challenges along the way. Outdated installations and old structural aspects needed to be updated and replaced with modern equivalents. A fair amount of heavy lifting was also necessary to get all the materials for the redevelopment to the right place, meaning that various parties had to coordinate their efforts. And the results speaks for its self.

Dánica Hooi (Project Manager): “We have all worked extremely hard to facilitate this redevelopment and all of our hard work has been rewarded: we have created a stunning lounge for a satisfied customer. That’s what it’s all about.”

Built to facilitate growth

The new Swissport Lounge was designed by D/Dock. The lounge is used by approximately 5000 passengers per week and this number is growing. During the design stages, growth and room for fifty extra seats were included in the planning.

Festive opening: 7 March

In about two weeks the Star Alliance Lounge will also be completed. The Star Alliance Lounge will be Swissport’s neighbours. To celebrate the opening of both Business Class Departure Lounges, a joint opening ceremony will be held by Swissport, Star Alliance and Schiphol on 7 March.
