The modified ramp was completed on 1 April. This marks the completion of the final phase of the so-called Early Enabling Works for Schiphol’s new baggage basement.
Early Enabling Works are the preparatory works that completely clear the area for the Southern Development of all existing functions, allowing us to build safely. Modifying the ramp was an essential step because the exit from the existing baggage basement was situated exactly where the entrance to the new basement will be. By rotating the ramp by 90 degrees and making it steeper, baggage trolleys will still be able to negotiate the bend.
The work on the ramp took a total of seven months. On Thursday 26 March, we carried out the final test runs. Among other things, we assessed safety, visibility and the driving routes. The ramp was put into use immediately upon completion.
Previously, we had already removed various shops and catering outlets on Pier B, constructed a new passenger link, rerouted the Rinze Hofstraweg, made the construction site landside and dismantled the Dogleg. With the completion of the ramp, all Early Enabling Works have been finalised and the construction site is now completely cleared.
Schiphol is working hard to modernise and further innovate its baggage basements. We are building a new baggage basement, including new baggage handling system, to replace the existing older systems, whilst operations continue. In constructing the new basement, we are taking into account the future new Terminal Zuid – part of Schiphol’s plans to restore quality at the airport. With the largest investment plan in the airport’s history, Schiphol aims to improve the infrastructure, working conditions and services provided to travellers and airlines.
