Taxiway maintenance in 2026

Rijbaanonderhoud

In 2026, Schiphol will be carrying out maintenance on several taxiways at the airport. Taxiways are the roads over which aircraft taxi to and from the runways. Maintenance is essential to keep these taxiways safe, reliable and in good condition.

Although no aircraft land or take off on or from the taxiways, the maintenance may impact how the runways are used during peak times. This may sometimes be noticeable to the local community.

What will we be doing?

The maintenance focuses on parts of taxiways A and B, between intersections A21 and A25, near the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. During the work, we will:

  • replace asphalt paving;
  • improve and expand drainage;
  • renew areas and fields along the taxiways;
  • adjust and replace lighting and signage.

Once the work is completed, aircraft can continue to taxi safely and efficiently.

When will the maintenance take place?

When planning, we deliberately took busy holiday periods, such as the May holiday, into account. That’s why we are carrying out the runway maintenance in two phases, before and after the May holiday. By splitting the maintenance, we minimise the impact on the surrounding area as much as possible.

What will you notice?

During the taxiway maintenance, handling aircraft on the ground may become more complicated. Fewer runway exits are available, for example. This affects the stability of our operations and the safe handling of taxiing traffic.

Especially during busy periods during the day, this may mean that runways are used differently than usual. This could lead to air traffic relocation. In certain situations, we may use the Buitenveldertbaan Runway more frequently instead of the Polderbaan Runway or the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. We expect this will only be necessary during some of the busiest landing peaks and not all day.

Good to know: the maintenance will not have an impact on air traffic at night.

What is Schiphol doing to minimise disruption?

Schiphol is taking several measures to minimise the impact on local residents:

  • The Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway will not be used for additional landings.
  • In addition to the usual use of the Buitenveldertbaan Runway (like when there are strong westerly winds), we will only use this runway during this period of taxiway maintenance if it is unavoidable due to traffic. And it will only be used during the day.
  • Where possible, we will combine taxiway maintenance with routine maintenance on the Polderbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways. This ensures that our runways are taken out of service less often and limits disruption to the surrounding area.
  • The schedule has been designed to avoid holiday periods.

Routine runway maintenance

In addition to taxiway maintenance, routine maintenance will be carried out on all runways in 2026. Insofar as possible, each runway will be out of service for one week: five working days, followed by a weekend without work, and then two more working days. This routine annual maintenance is separate from the taxiway maintenance described above.
