News: Works at Schiphol Airport train station resume

Over the coming months, construction company BAM Infra Civiel will be working on the railways around Schiphol. ProRail will be replacing the ramps to the platform level with fixed stairs. These works will be going on until spring 2024. The railway in the Schiphol Tunnel is outdated and needs an upgrade. Until 2028, ProRail will be making sure that the Schiphol Tunnel railway infrastructure is ready for the next forty years.

The first smoke compartments that enable the work to be carried out safely are now in place.

Several train-free periods

In order to carry out the works in the tunnel, there needs to be several ‘train-free periods’. During these periods, the rail service around Schiphol will be adjusted so that the works can be carried out safely. There are six moments planned this autumn/winter and there will be more at the start of 2024.

In the week of 2 to 8 October and the weekend of 14 to 15 October, some of the tunnel tubes at Schiphol Airport Station will not be in use. Trains may be busier, run less frequently or leave from a different platform than usual. Plan your journey in advance using the NS travel planner and take delays of between 10 and 30 minutes into account.

Works may cause some inconvenience. Travellers who want to report any inconvenience can do so using the QR codes that can be found on the walls that have been placed around the escalators to create a safe working area (smoke compartments).

What's happening?

The railways and sleepers are being replaced in both tunnel tubes. The railways around the platforms are being raised so that the step to board the train is level with the platform. To do that we are using an innovative beam track that has a longer lifespan and requires less maintenance. At the same time, the station's ramps are being replaced by fixed stairs. We're doing this to create more space on the platforms in order to accommodate the expected growth in traveller numbers.
