Welcome to the updated Departure Hall 1. We've worked hard to redevelop and modernise the departure hall over the past few years. By improving the layout and adding a mezzanine floor, more room for security, check-in and waiting areas has been created. Departures 1 is ready for the future.

What did we do?

The redevelopment of Departures 1 means a significant quality upgrade and a lot more space for travellers. Thanks to the new mezzanine, we have 5,000 square metres of extra floor space. That's almost equal to an entire football pitch! We built 21 security lanes on the mezzanine floor – six more than before. All lanes are equipped with state-of-the-art CT scanners that will make the passenger security process quicker and easier.

A 4-metre extension was added, and the extra space was used to create a stairwell and lift to the mezzanine and Panorama Terrace. This means that travellers with only hand baggage no longer need to pass through the check-in area. Travellers with hold baggage can make use of a new stairwell and lift behind check-in.

Facts & figures

Renovating an entire departure hall takes time and a lot of hard work. Here are some facts and figures to give you an idea of the size and scope of this project:

  • A total of nearly 300,000 man-hours went into construction and installation works.
  • To make sure there's enough fresh air, we replaced two old air treatment units and installed a large new one. It blows 52,300 cubic meters of fresh air into the terminal every hour.
  • There are 235 cooling panels above the new security lanes on the mezzanine. The check-in desks on the first floor got a new climate ceiling with 420 active panels that can both cool and heat.
  • The renovated departure hall contains 60 kilometres of cabling for the fire alarm and evacuation systems. 750 loudspeakers and 15 beams warn travellers in case of an emergency.
  • More than 90 kilometres of data cable and 2.4 kilometres of fibre-optic cable were laid for seven new local server rooms.
  • We installed more than 70 kilometres of power cable, more than 6 kilometres of cable duct and around 4,500 new fixtures in the renovated departure hall.
