News: Buitenveltertbaan Runway may be used more due to strong south-easterly winds

Maintenance works are being carried out on Schiphol’s Runway C from 6 January until 15 January. These works bear no consequences for runway use in principle, except if there are strong south-easterly winds. If that happens, we may expect to increase the use of the Buitenveldertbaan Runway for departing air traffic. This will be noticeable if you live in, for example, Buitenveldert (Amstelveen), Amsterdam - Southeast, Diemen, Muiden or Weesp.

One-way traffic

Runway C is the taxiway next to the Zwanenburgbaan Runway and near the A4 Schiphol Tunnel. Due to the works, aircraft taxiing to or from the Polderbaan Runway or Zwanenburgbaan Runway cannot use this runway. The adjacent Runway D can only be used in one direction. When south-easterly winds are strong, planes will land on the Polderbaan Runway and taxi towards Schiphol using Runway D. In that case, it is then not possible to taxi in the opposite direction to the top of the Zwanenburgbaan to take off in a southerly direction. That is why the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be used if this happens.

Runway maintenance

In addition to runway maintenance, we also regularly work on the runways over which the aircraft taxi. It is important that these lanes, as well as all entrances and exits, are in good condition so that taxiing is safe and efficient. We check these thoroughly and replace the asphalt, markings and lighting where necessary.
