Invoering European Entry/Exit System op Schiphol

In collaboration with the Dutch government, we are preparing for the introduction of new European regulations. All Schengen countries will be using the European Entry/Exit System (EES). This digital system will largely replace passport stamps across Europe.

Non-EU (third country) nationals travelling to the Schengen Zone for a short stay will be digitally registered in a central European database upon arrival. This registration includes a passport scan, facial recognition and fingerprints. Both the entry and exit of non-EU citizens into Schengen will be recorded in the EES. The objective is a safer Europe.

To support this process, the border procedure at Schiphol Airport is being adapted. For a smooth passenger flow, self-service border kiosks have been installed where passengers can register. Verification then takes place at the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee border counter. Non-EU nationals from certain safe countries can use the eGates after the introduction of the EES.

Registration in the EES system takes extra time in an already busy border process. Schiphol is therefore facing a challenge: working with the government to make the registration of many thousands of non-EU passengers each day run as smoothly as possible.
