News: Kaagbaan under maintenance for 1.5 weeks and ILS to be replaced

The Kaagbaan Runway started undergoing maintenance in the afternoon of Wednesday 13 October. The runway will therefore not be available for air traffic until 19:00 on Friday 22 October. We expect more aircraft to land on the Aalsmeerbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways. The Aalsmeerbaan, Buitenveldertbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways will be deployed for take-offs.

Replacement of landing system

During maintenance on the Kaagbaan, Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) will be simultaneously replacing the Instrument Landing System (ILS). An ILS helps aircraft to descend to the runway at a gradual angle. A number of activities can only be carried out on the ILS after the maintenance work has been completed and measurement flights are conducted to verify the correct and accurate operation of the system. After that, the runway can be used again for landings when visibility is good.

Landing at times of limited visibility

According to international safety regulations, any new ILS must have been operating reliably and stably for five weeks before the runway can be used for landing when visibility is limited. So only after that can the Kaagbaan Runway be used for landing in all visibility conditions. Between 22 October and mid-November, the Aalsmeerbaan Runway and Zwanenburgbaan Runway can be deployed for landing when there is a northerly wind and when visibility is limited.
