Exactly 100 years ago, on 1 April 1926, the Ministry of War formally handed Schiphol Airport over to the city of Amsterdam. A lasting relationship between our capital and national airport was forged.
Now, 100 years later, Amsterdam thrives thanks to its international character, and Schiphol is one of Europe’s most important and largest aviation hubs. These achievements cannot be seen as separate from one another. Schiphol is proud of its contribution to the economic, cultural, sporting and social development the city has undergone. And happy that, thanks to its proximity to Amsterdam, the airport can serve as the region’s economic engine.
That’s why, this April, we are reflecting on our connection with the capital. What does it entail, what do we do together and what does this relationship mean for Amsterdam and its residents?
