Energy transition at Schiphol

Schiphol Utilities, part of Schiphol Nederland B.V., manages the electricity network at Schiphol. We ensure a reliable and safe energy supply for all users. The energy transition brings changes and challenges. Read here what this means for Schiphol and how we’re addressing it.

Growing demand for electricity

Electricity demand in the Netherlands is increasing, and the energy transition is in full swing. This means we’re shifting from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources like solar and wind. New consumers such as electric vehicles and heat pumps are driving up electricity demand. Expansions and changes in existing installations also increase the need for transport capacity.

Schiphol is no exception, and this places high demands on our energy network. We aim to stop emitting harmful substances and move toward fossil-free buildings and processes.

Adapting and expanding
The energy transition means Schiphol needs more electricity to, for example, charge electric vehicles and support sustainable energy projects. This requires adjustments and expansions to the electricity network to meet the growing demand. Schiphol Utilities is working to increase transport capacity and optimise the network.

Despite our efforts, it remains a challenge to meet the rising electricity demand. That’s why there is a transport limitation on our network. On the page about grid congestion and transport limitation, you can read what this means.

Ready for the future
The energy transition also brings other challenges, such as integrating new technologies and ensuring the reliability and safety of the energy supply. We must ensure the infrastructure is future-proof and that there is enough capacity to meet growing demand. The energy transition has a major impact on Schiphol. It requires a proactive approach and continuous investment in the electricity network to make the airport sustainable and future-ready.

Contributing
Companies at Schiphol can also contribute by, among other things, reducing gas consumption. This can be done by way of heat pumps, WKO systems, and electric transport. Many companies at Schiphol are already taking measures. Together, we can reduce CO₂ emissions and increase electricity demand. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise you.
