Diesel-powered equipment is making way for electric alternatives. Fixed power units (FPUs), electric pre-conditioned air units (e-PCAs) and electric ground power units (e-GPUs) are now available at most locations around the airport.
In order to be able to turn off the auxiliary engine (APU) of the aircraft, certain equipment is used to provide the aircraft with power and fresh air at the aircraft stand. This equipment was diesel-powered in the past. Now, many electric variants are available. We have already electrified large parts of the airport and will continue to do so in the coming years.
According to Schiphol regulations, it is prohibited to use diesel aircraft equipment when there is an alternative available that produces fewer emissions. We strive for a high level of enforcement of these regulations.
On the apron, you see more and more electric vehicles and fewer diesel or petrol vehicles. Baggage tractors, scissor lifts and loading platforms are increasingly electrically powered. The bus fleet is already fully electric; there are no diesel buses on Airside anymore. For some diesel vehicles, such as de-icing vehicles and fire engines, there is no electric variant available yet. Where possible, particulate filters are installed. As with the aircraft equipment, the remaining diesel vehicles uses the cleaner HVO100 biodiesel.
We have set up the Airside Electrification Programme to gradually install (fast) chargers and sockets at the airport. This is a prerequisite for replacing diesel aircraft equipment, vehicles and other work equipment with electric variants.
