Sustainable fuel available at Schiphol
Airlines can now refuel with sustainable kerosene at Schiphol more easily. It is now available on request thanks to fuel supplier Neste’s minority stake in Aircraft Fuel Supply (AFS).
Made from sustainable waste and residual raw materials
Neste is the world’s biggest supplier of sustainable aviation fuel. AFS operates Schiphol’s fuel supply. Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel is made from sustainable sources, renewable waste and residual raw materials. The greenhouse gas emissions it produces may be up to 80% lower when compared to fossil kerosene.
No extra investment necessary
Neste My Sustainable Aviation Fuel can be used as drop-in fuel for existing aircraft engines and with existing airport infrastructure – no extra investment necessary. Before being used, Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel is blended with fossil aviation fuel. Then, it needs to be certified to prove that it meets ASTM jet fuel requirements.
Use of sustainable kerosene must increase
According to Dick Benschop, CEO of Schiphol, Neste’s arrival is an important step in our plans to make the aviation sector more sustainable. Dick Benschop: ‘The quality of Schiphol’s network must go hand-in-hand with big strides towards sustainable aviation. Sustainable aviation fuel is a proven technology and its use needs to be scaled up.’
Annual capacity set to grow
Neste’s annual sustainable kerosene capacity is currently 100,000 tonnes. With the forthcoming expansion of Neste’s refinery in Singapore and possible extra investments in the Rotterdam refinery, Neste will have the capacity to produce around 1.5 million tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in 2023. This fuel is already being supplied to various commercial airlines, business aviation customers and airports in Europe and North America.
