Award-winning circular concrete soon at Schiphol

The winner of the SHARE Award 2023 is one we know well. Bio Bound's sustainable and now award-winning concrete products will soon be at Schiphol. And they are helping us with our ambition to become the world's most sustainable airport.

Denise Pronk (Head of Sustainability, Schiphol), Rob van den Bergh (Sourcing Manager, Schiphol) and Jaap Schotanus (Founder Bio Bound).

The SHARE Award is for companies and organisations that stand out in the field of sustainable innovation and pioneering. It is awarded by SHARE Haarlemmermeer, an initiative in which the Haarlemmermeer municipality and (local) businesses work together toward a sustainable and healthy society. Due to the location of our airport – right in the middle of the Haarlemmermeer Polder – and our ambitions regarding sustainability, Schiphol has been involved in the initiative as a founder since it was launched.

Sustainable and circular concrete

And so this year, Bio Bound, based in Cruquius a stone's throw away from Schiphol, may call themselves the winner of the SHARE Award 2023. The company makes circular concrete products out of recycled concrete rubble. These include tiles, paving stones, paving slabs and street furniture.

Less CO2

What's more, elephant grass is added to these concrete products. This leads to a reduction in the amount of CO2 in the air. Elephant grass is widely grown in the area around Schiphol because it helps keep geese away, but this grass species is also known to absorb significant amounts of CO2 while growing. In other words, it's a win-win situation!

Concrete slabs and paving material

It's a great, sustainable product. Reason enough for us to join forces with Bio Bound. In the short term, circular concrete slabs made by the company will be laid at Temporary Storage Area 5. We're also going to use bio-based paving material at Koeriersplein. If that turns out well, we hope to purchase Bio Bound products more frequently in the future.

Another step

Thanks to an innovative local concrete maker, we are not only taking another step toward a circular and energy-positive airport, but we are also further reducing CO2 emissions. And the icing on the cake is that we're working on a good relationship with our local community too.
