Help us come up with ideas for noise-reduction innovations in public spaces

What innovative ideas can we come up with to reduce noise nuisance in public spaces around Schiphol? To find out, we recently organised a hackathon. Read on to find out more.

Schiphol is encouraging airlines to fly quieter aircraft. And through our ‘Minder Hinder Schiphol’ programme, we are working on measures to reduce noise nuisance in the vicinity of our airport. But aren’t there even more innovative ideas that could offer a potential solution for noise reduction in public spaces like squares, bus stops and parks?

Our colleagues at the Innovation Hub (a department that works on innovative solutions to issues at our airport) commissioned a study to find out. This study identified a number of potential concepts. Together with the Schiphol Environmental Fund, we want to explore further how we can put these ideas into practice.

Hackathon

During a hackathon themed around noise-reduction innovations in public spaces, research institutes, policymakers, sector partners and potential suppliers came together to further develop three possible ideas. It was an action-packed and valuable day full of creativity and inspiration.

Opportunity for feedback

We’ve made great strides, but we’re not there yet. Now it’s time to further develop the concepts to find solutions that not only work but can also be tested in the short term. That’s why, on Thursday 11 June, we are holding a new meeting for a broader group of participants. We’ll outline the steps that have already been taken and provide an opportunity to give feedback on the ideas that have been suggested. By doing this, we start a dialogue with the local community.
