The Buitenveldertbaan Runway is available for air traffic again. Maintenance work on the runway has been completed, and the runway has been back in use since the evening of Tuesday 30 September.
This is two days later than originally planned. The reason for this delay is the planned work at the intersection of the Aalsmeerbaan Runway and Buitenveldertbaan Runway. Recent inspections revealed that it could not be determined with certainty whether it was safe to carry out this work when aircraft were taking off and landing on the Buitenveldertbaan.
It was therefore necessary to carefully determine whether the Buitenveldertbaan Runway could be used safely for air traffic. It is now clear that the runway is indeed safe to use.
Over the past months, the entire runway was renovated and extensive work was done on, among other things, replacing the asphalt, installing energy-efficient LED lighting, and improving the rainwater drainage systems. Thanks to this maintenance, the runway is now ready for many more years of use.
While the major maintenance took place, Air Traffic Control the Netherlands worked on upgrading the Instrument Landing System (ILS). Measurement flights are being conducted to test the correct and accurate functioning of the ILS. You can read more about it here.
