Schiphol Pass Points System

hero ascending safety and security puntensysteem

From 1 January 2026, Schiphol will introduce a points system for Schiphol passes in cases of personal violations of the Schiphol Rules. This system provides clarity about the consequences of breaches, such as driving without a seatbelt, misuse of your Schiphol pass, or smoking in prohibited areas.

Why a points system?

The Schiphol regulations exist to ensure we work safely and responsibly together. The points system supports this by making the impact of your behaviour clear. A violation can put not only yourself at risk, but also colleagues or passengers. Breaches can also affect overall safety at Schiphol.

How the Points System Works

The points system is simple and similar to the penalty points system for driving licences: if you violate the Schiphol Rules, you will receive one or more points on your Schiphol pass. The number of points depends on the severity of the violation and its (potential) impact. If you put others at risk, this carries more weight. For example, failing to wear a seatbelt will result in at least 1 point. Holding a mobile device while operating a vehicle will immediately result in at least 2 points. Misuse of your Schiphol pass is considered serious; lending your pass to someone else will earn you at least 4 points. Multiple minor violations can also add up.

Sanctions Linked to Points

Sanctions are linked to the number of points on your Schiphol pass:

  • With 1 or 2 points, you will receive a warning letter.
  • At 3 points, you must successfully retake the Safety & Security Test within two weeks to avoid your pass being blocked.
  • From 4 points onwards, your Schiphol pass will be temporarily blocked.

Good Behaviour is Rewarded

You can also reduce points through good behaviour. If you go six months without any violations, you will lose one point. We recognise that everyone can make mistakes, but we also expect people to learn from them. Only repeated or deliberate breaches of the rules will lead to stricter sanctions, such as mandatory safety tests or (temporary) blocking or withdrawal of your Schiphol pass.

A Rule Violation: What Happens Next?

The way we monitor and enforce the rules remains the same. If you commit a violation, Schiphol will send a letter to your employer (the authorised signatory). The letter will include details of the violation, the number of points assigned, and your total points balance. It will also state the corresponding sanction, if applicable.

Which Sanction Applies?

When a violation occurs, the points for that violation are added to any previous penalty points. Based on the total number of points, the most severe applicable sanction from the table will apply. Schiphol may deviate from this or impose additional measures if the situation requires it.
