Together towards a cleaner Schiphol: Emission-free traffic at Schiphol-Centre

Schiphol aims to reduce the number of vehicles that produce harmful emissions. To achieve this, we will be gradually increasing the number of zero-emission vehicles at Schiphol in the coming years. One of the ways we will achieve this is by introducing a zero-emission (emission-free) zone in the centre of Schiphol from January 2026. From that point, only vans and trucks with zero CO2 emissions will be allowed to drive inside this zone. Examples of zero-emission vehicles are electric vehicles or hydrogen-powered vehicles. This zero-emission zone (ZE zone) does not apply to passenger cars, which will still be able to drive in and out of the zone.

We understand that the introduction of the ZE zone represents quite a change for many entrepreneurs. That is why we want to help you as best as we can. On this page you can read more about what Schiphol is going to do and why we are doing it. Furthermore, on the ‘Help and advice’ page you can read more about who to contact if you have any questions. On the ‘Lorries and vans’ page you can read up on all the latest information pertaining to access requirements and exemptions.

What will Schiphol do?

Together with the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, Schiphol will introduce a zero-emission zone from 1 January 2026. In this zone, fewer and fewer delivery vans and lorries will be running on fossil fuels from 2026 onwards. We also refer to this as urban logistics. Ultimately, the final contours of the area will be determined by the municipality of Haarlemmermeer in a traffic decree in 2024. The overview map shows the planned contours of the area:

Why is Schiphol doing this?

Our ambition is to become the most sustainable, high-quality airport across the globe. This is why we want our airports to be emission-free and waste-free by 2030. This means that all of Schiphol's operations, with the exception of air traffic, will be emission-free. Ultimately, we want energy-positive operations that are based on as much recycling as possible. The introduction of the emission-free zone in the centre of Schiphol is one of the steps we are taking to achieve this ambition. Now that the national climate agreement has set the goal of making the urban logistics chain sustainable, we believe this is the right time to proceed with our plans. By doing so, we join the national initiatives of 29 municipalities: zero-emission city logistics and zero-emission taxi transport.

When will the zero-emission zone come into effect?

The emission-free zone will come into effect from 1 January 2026. From this date, a transitional phase will apply, and fewer and fewer polluting taxis, vans and trucks will be allowed to enter the zero-emission zone. You can read more about the transition phase for vans and trucks here. Eventually, by 2030, only trucks and vans running on hydrogen or electricity will be allowed into the zone.

What should you do now?

Do you want to know up until when your vehicle will be allowed to enter the zone? Then simply do the license plate check. This website also provides you with all of the information about admission requirements, exemptions, and dispensations. First and foremost, request a consultation with our zero-emission Zone advisor Daan Zegwaart. Together with you, he will look at the possibilities for your specific situation.
