Polderbaan Runway fully open again

The Polderbaan Runway at Schiphol is fully available for air traffic again. The temporary measure for landing traffic has been lifted as of Monday 31 March 2025. This means that modified runway use will also end.

Landing air traffic could not use the Polderbaan for a few hours a day in the last few weeks. The reason for this was the fact that pilots were being affected by the glare of a nearby solar panel park. Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL), KLM, easyJet and Schiphol decided to close the runway between 10:00 and 12:00 for incoming flights in order to guarantee the safety of air traffic.

Position of the sun

The measure was extended by two weeks last week, but in the meantime several studies from the Dutch Aerospace Center have shown that from today aircraft can land safely again at any time and under all weather conditions. The position of the sun with regard to the solar panels has changed, meaning that the view of landing pilots is no longer being impeded.

Permanent solution

Although the measure is no longer in force, a definitive solution for the situation is necessary to prevent the glare from leading to problems again during the year. The parties involved therefore remain in consultation with the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management and the owner of the solar park.
