News  ·  24 September New jobs for Schiphol CEO and mayor of Haarlemmermeer

Schiphol CEO Pieter van Oord and Haarlemmermeer Mayor Marianne Schuurmans swapped jobs for a day. Discover what they learned from each other.

The CEO of Schiphol, Pieter van Oord, and Mayor Marianne Schuurmans swapped jobs for a day. This gave them a firsthand look at what each other's role involves in practice. The initiative highlighted the close connection between the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer and Schiphol, demonstrating their mutual value and the differing interests they represent. Schiphol is economically important to Haarlemmermeer, but the airport also has an impact on local residents, particularly when it comes to environmental issues and aircraft noise.

‘Mayor’ Pieter van Oord attended meetings with members of the Municipal Executive Board. He also visited the Cruquius Museum, where Schiphol’s history is featured as part of the exhibition. The pumping station itself, of course, played a key role in creating the polder on which Schiphol was able to develop. The highlight of the day was chairing a municipal council meeting, where mayor-for-a-day Pieter van Oord presided over proceedings. During the meeting, council members were also given an update on Schiphol.

‘Schiphol CEO’ Marianne Schuurmans spent time in the terminal, where she received a briefing from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and toured the brand-new Pier A, which is scheduled to open in 2027. A meeting with BARIN, the association representing airline interests in the Netherlands, was also on the agenda. She also joined meetings with Schiphol’s executive leadership team. Topics discussed included reducing noise disturbance and improving air quality in the surrounding area. The day concluded with a meal at the Fire Brigade.

The following day, Pieter van Oord and Marianne Schuurmans returned to their regular positions, but with a much deeper understanding of each other’s work and an even stronger connection between Schiphol and the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer.
