Groundwater monitoring at storage facilities PFAS-containing soil

In May 2025, the Dorpsraad Badhoevedorp and Schiphol reached an agreement to conduct additional groundwater monitoring at the temporary storage facilities for PFAS-containing soil located next to the Zwanenburgbaan runway. As part of this agreement, Schiphol will periodically check whether the quality of the groundwater is being affected by the storage of PFAS-containing soil. The first inspection took place in August. The results show that there have been no exceedances of the agreed signal or action thresholds.

No exceedances

Under the agreement, Schiphol will carry out additional inspections twice a year at temporary storage locations TTOP 1 through 4. These inspections are in addition to the standard soil investigations conducted before and after the use of a storage site, as well as weekly inspections of the condition of the storage areas.

Schiphol shares the results of the groundwater monitoring with the Dorpsraad Badhoevedorp and publishes them on schiphol.nl/pfas. The agreement clearly defines signal and action thresholds, along with the follow-up steps the airport will take in the event of an exceedance. As we consider it important that the Environmental Service Noordzeekanaal area is also informed of the monitoring results, we share the reports with them as well.

Monitoring conducted by Terrascan

The groundwater investigation was carried out by Terrascan, an independent consultancy specialising in soil and environmental research. They use 12 monitoring wells across the various temporary storage locations to collect groundwater samples. These samples are then analysed for 30 PFAS compounds in a certified laboratory. These are the standard PFAS to be analysed as determined by the RIVM.
