Over the coming months, Dutch company DeNoize is going to be testing its smart window technology in practice in around ten to fifteen homes around Schiphol. Keep reading to find out exactly what this will involve.
In recent years, DeNoize has been working on a technology that allows external noise to be 'filtered' through windows in a smart way. This innovation dampens disturbing noises but allows positive sounds, such as birdsong, to remain audible.
In the second half of 2024, the company conducted a sleep study in collaboration with Schiphol and the Schiphol Living Environment Foundation. Participants were invited to sleep in a test house near the airport for two nights, one night with the technology switched on and one night without.
The results of the study showed that participants fell asleep faster, woke up less often, and slept longer overall when the DeNoize technology was enabled. Around 70 per cent of participants reported sleeping better when the system was active.
The next step in development will therefore follow in the coming months. DeNoize is going to test the technology in around ten to fifteen homes near the airport. Residents will use the smart windows in their own living environment for a week. DeNoize intends to further optimise the system based on the insights gained from this practical test.
