Schiphol’s policy to encourage airlines to deploy quieter aircraft through airport charges is showing results. Research has revealed that in the summer of 2025, about one-third of all aircraft movements at our airport were carried out with planes belonging to the quietest categories. That's an increase compared to last year. This development could contribute to less noise in the local area over time.
Since April 2025, the fees for airlines - also known as airport charges - have been adjusted to promote the use of quieter aircraft. The quieter the plane, the lower the airport charges. This makes it more attractive to deploy quieter planes. Data shows that this policy is having an effect; the proportion of the quietest aircraft has increased further in recent months.
The usage forecast for 2026 anticipates a further decrease in the number of people experiencing nuisance because of aircraft noise. The number of night flights is also declining, from 33,000 in 2016 to an expected 25,100 in 2026.
Schiphol remains committed to becoming a quieter airport and continues to work with airlines on measures to further reduce noise nuisance for the surrounding area.
