Delft-based company DeNoize develops soundproofing technology for windows. Basically, this technology senses, filters and cancels the noise made by aircraft and passing traffic. Schiphol is supporting DeNoize because we believe this technology can make a positive contribution to the quality of the living environment for people who live in the vicinity of our airport.

Noise-cancelling headphones

You can compare how it works to noise-cancelling headphones, but then for the home. The system targets frequencies between 100 and 1,000 Hz. Low-frequency noises cause more noise nuisance because they pass through glass surfaces more easily.

The DeNoize system analyses outside noise and makes the glass vibrate using an inverted signal. As a result, less noise nuisance is experienced in the home. Another good thing about this system is that you can choose which sounds you still want to hear, like wind, rain or birdsong.

In real life

It sounds good in theory. But does it also work in real life? To test that out, DeNoize has built a pilot house close to Schiphol in which to conduct (sleep) studies. And you can now come and find out for yourself whether the system does what it promises. You'll stay overnight in the house, get the chance to experience how the DeNoize technology works, and of course you can let us know what you thought of it and what you think can be improved.
