News: Possible extra use of Buitenveldertbaan Runway

To the south of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway lie the taxiways Quebec and Zulu. These will be unavailable from 07:00 on Monday 28th September until 18:00 on Friday 16th October due to works. During this period, work is also taking place on two runway entries and exits on the south side of Zwanenburgbaan Runway. As a result, we expect the Buitenveldertbaan Runway to be used during the day for departing and landing aircraft at peak times. This will affect aircraft noise in the area to the east of this runway.

Update 8 October: If the Buitenveldert Runway cannot be used due to, for example, weather conditions such as strong south-southwest wind, then the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway will be used as the second runway for landings.

Taxi route

Aircraft will not be able to taxi to the south of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway for three weeks because of these works on taxiways Quebec and Zulu. This means that, if the Polderbaan Runway and Zwanenburgbaan Runway are being used simultaneously at peak times, aircraft will have to go around the north side of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway to get to and from the Polderbaan Runway. For safety reasons, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway is therefore used more frequently at peak times when air traffic wants to land from a northerly direction or wants to depart in the same direction.

Buitenveldertbaan Runway at peak times

For the reasons mentioned above, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway is preferred as second runway over the Zwanenburg runway for three weeks. Whether the Buitenveldertbaan Runway is actually used as a second runway at peak take-off or landing times depends on factors like the wind and weather conditions, and air traffic volumes. On Fridays, we reveal the expected peak times in our weekly look ahead at the following week.

Works on taxiways

The works on taxiways Quebec and Zulu are in preparation for the completion of the dual taxiway system around Schiphol. We’ve also started building a second viaduct for planes over the A4 motorway for this same reason. Work on the taxiways in this area will take place later this year and next year. The impact of these next phases on runway use is still being investigated. More information will follow as soon as it is available. Read more about the taxiway Quebec project.
