News: Polderbaan Runway out of use due to maintenance

The Polderbaan Runway will be out of use from 07:00 on Monday 31st August to 18:00 on Monday 7th September due to the planned annual maintenance. This will affect aircraft noise in the local area because we expect more air traffic on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway this week, also at night. It is likely that the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be used as a second runway at peak times.

Zwanenburgaan Runway use

The Polderbaan Runway is one the most frequently used runways at Schiphol. That’s because this runway causes the least noise nuisance relative to other runways, as there are fewer houses. While maintenance is carried out on the runway this week, we expect to make more use of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. The Zwanenburgbaan Runway can be used for departing air traffic when there is a northerly wind, and for landing air traffic when there is a southerly wind. In both cases, aircraft take off and land from the direction of Halfweg and Zwanenburg.

Buitenveldertbaan Runway use

While this maintenance is carried out, we expect that the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be used more frequently at peak landing times when there is a southerly or southwesterly wind. When there is a northerly wind during peak take-off times, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway can be used as a second runway. Which runways are used depends on the wind and weather conditions at the time.

New night route

The Polderbaan Runway is also usually used at night. We have requested for the Zwanenburgbaan Runway to be used at night for the duration of the maintenance period. As a result, we do not need to use the Kaagbaan Runway in a northeasterly direction at night, which would cause nuisance in Amsterdam and Amstelveen. Thanks to a new fixed night approach route to the Zwanenburgbaan, aircraft will fly around residential areas as much as possible, so that night flights cause less noise disturbance.
