News: Fly around residential areas at night to the Zwanenburgbaan runway

Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) implemented an innovative fixed night-time approach route to the Zwanenburgbaan runway at the end of May. The aircraft fly around the residential areas as much as possible, so that night flights cause less noise disturbance. KLM has already flown this approach route during the day in order to experience it more quickly due to the airport’s currently limited air traffic.

In consultation with local residents

The fixed night approach route to the Zwanenburgbaan runway will only be flown if the Polderbaan runway is not available at night. The flight route was discussed extensively with residents and drivers in the area. It was approved at the end of 2019 during the Regioforum van de Omgevingsraad meeting (Regional Forum of the Schiphol Environment Council, or ORS). The fixed nocturnal approach route has been used since 21 May 2020. You will find a detailed description of the fixed approach route to the Zwanenburgbaan Runway here (Dutch only).

Flying high at night

LVNL began using new flight procedures in May. Planes will fly higher at night from the North Sea to the Polderbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runway. That saves on the noise disturbance experienced by residents in Castricum and Limmen because the planes will fly higher and use less engine power.
