News: Buitenveldertbaan Runway out of service for 4 weeks

The Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be out of service for maintenance works for 4 weeks between Friday 22 May-Friday 19 June. These works involve regular maintenance on the track and the adjacent roadway. We do not expect any environmental consequences due to the low number of flights taking place right now.

Possible use of the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway

There will be very few planes landing on runways other than the Polderbaan Runway and Kaagbaan Runway. They are both given preference because the approach and departure routes pass relatively fewer homes than the other runways do. It may be possible to use the Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway if there is a strong southwest to westerly winds. The Buitenveldertbaan Runway and the Oostbaan Runway will partly follow the same flight paths.

The plan changes are better for the environment

The Buitenveldertbaan Runway was due to be out of service twice this year for maintenance works. However, the schedule was changed due to the low air traffic volumes at present. All works are now being carried out at once, so that the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will no longer be taken out of service later in the year during busier time periods. This will prevent any inconvenience to people in the area.

Inspections, cleaning and lawn mowing

We carry out regular maintenance on the Buitenveldertbaan Runway. Where necessary, we repair the top layer of the asphalt and the markings, inspect and clean rainwater drainage, check the cabling and electricity, and mow the lawns around it. We will also carry out works on the Buitenveldertbaan Runway’s entry and exit points.

Major maintenance on surrounding roadways

Major maintenance works are being performed on the surrounding roadway. More than 26,000 tonnes of asphalt will be milled, removed and refitted; 10-kms of markings will be applied; 25-kms of cabling will be replaced and 335 lamps will be replaced. These works will continue until 29 June. From 19 June, however, they will bear no influence on runway use and the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be able to be used again, if necessary.
