News: Aalsmeerbaan Runway under maintenance next week

Next week, the Aalsmeerbaan runway will be undergoing maintenance. The work will start at 07:00 on the morning of Monday 2 November and last until 19:00 on the evening of Saturday 7 November As a result, we expect to be using the Buitenveldertbaan Runway more often and the Zwanenburgbaan Runway can also be used more in a southerly direction. Which runway is used depends on different factors, such as the weather conditions.

Work at night

Because works are being carried out in places where the Aalsmeerbaan Runway intersects with other runways, the Kaagbaan Runway will not be in use at night (23:00 – 06:00) between Monday and Thursday 2-5 November. On Tuesday and Wednesday night (3-4 November), the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will also be unavailable. The Polderbaan Runway and Zwanenburgbaan Runway may therefore be deployed at night on these days.

Removing rubber

During the maintenance of the Aalsmeerbaan Runway, we will repair the tarmac, replace the lighting where necessary and remove the rubber that aircraft tyres leave behind on landing. After all, the asphalt on a runway is much coarser than, for example, the asphalt on the motorway. When an aircraft lands on a new layer of asphalt, it leaves behind ten kilos (!) of rubber on the runway. As the runway is used more frequently, this amount decreases to around 4 to 6 kilograms of ‘stuck’ rubber per landing.
