The new terminal will have a new baggage processing system. It will process all hold, reclaim and transfer baggage immediately. The system will be situated on the basement level below the new terminal. It will be connected to the new terminal’s operational systems, to allow for seamless and smooth baggage handling.
Waiting for your suitcase
Hold, transfer and ‘remote check-in’ baggage will be screened and stored by the new system, then routed to the correct flight. The system will be designed in the second half of 2017. Construction will only begin with the baggage system is ready, as well as other crucial parts of the terminal’s infrastructure. The baggage system is scheduled for completion, along with the new terminal, during the course of 2023.
Who it affects
A new pier and terminal will change how baggage is handled. The new terminal will have its own baggage system. This is useful information for travellers as well as baggage handlers.
What will happen
There will be a new facility called the ‘remote baggage check-in’, in addition to the new baggage basement. The baggage will be collected by the passenger via the handler before the trip – for instance, at a hotel or cruise terminal. The outer part o the new terminal has a special freestanding facility for the baggage handler. From there, the baggage will be automatically transported, screened, stored and sorted.
Where it will take place
The new terminal will have its own baggage system. A new baggage basement is being built, in line with the current southern baggage hall. Using the new system, hold baggage will be transported there, then screened, stored and sorted for flights. Reclaim baggage will also be stored here, but will be transported to the baggage reclaim hall in the new terminal. A stand-alone facility is being created for transfer baggage, which will be able to handle that baggage automatically.
When the changes will occur
Design of the baggage system will commence in the second half of 2017, concurrent to the design of the new terminal. The baggage system will be part of the new terminal’s construction, which includes the departure and reclaim halls. We are working hard to make this happen within the course of 2020. The baggage system will be delivered with the new terminal in 2023.
