News: Terminal 1: full speed ahead on four floors at once

At Terminal 1, we are taking the art of multi-tasking to new levels: we are currently working flat out on four floors at once, from the ground floor all the way up to the technical ‘cockpit’, just under the roof. And for good reason! At the beginning of December 2020, we are due to open the first ten brand-new security lanes on the mezzanine. That involves an intensive combination of interior construction and installation work to make sure everything looks neat and finished on time. Here’s a taste of what we’re up to.

Ground floor: Plaza

On the ground floor Plaza – below Departure Hall 1 – we are building three separate stair/escalator/lift groups, which will soon take passengers to and from the new security gate on the mezzanine. Our current focus is fitting the escalator and lift casings in the ceilings.

First floor: Departure Hall 1

On this floor it’s all hands on deck! From placing – and in some cases finishing – new stairways, escalators and lifts at various points to deconstructing the last lanes and getting rid of the former crew filter. And from preparing the construction of a new toilet group and lounge for persons with reduced mobility (at what used to be DF1) to finishing off the underside of the mezzanine at check-in desk rows 7 and 8.

Second floor: Departure Hall 1

On the second floor (mezzanine) we are already getting glimpses of just how fantastic this new space is going to look. The first ten security lanes are currently being prepared for the opening, while we work to complete various aspects of the construction, not least the installations and the ceiling. At the same time we are laying a new floor where the stairs and escalators to the Panorama Terrace used to be.

Third floor: technical areas and air treatment

The third floor is home to what we like to think of as the cockpit of Terminal 1: the technical hub, which is of course out of bounds for passengers. Here too, work is nearing completion. At present, we are connecting the air treatment units to the ducts that will supply air to the second floor.

We still have a few intensive weeks ahead, but we can’t wait to unveil this brand-new phase for Terminal 1, a bright future in which we are better equipped than ever to give passengers the warm welcome they have come to expect. It’s full speed ahead for Schiphol, and Terminal 1 is almost ready to roll!
