Blog  ·  10 June50 years of the Airport Chaplaincy at Schiphol

Most travellers have a pleasant time at Schiphol. But unfortunately, things sometimes go wrong and your journey goes differently than expected. Perhaps it turns out your visa is no longer valid, you missed your transfer or you are emotionally drained for some other reason.

Listening ear and practical help

Fortunately, there is the Airport Chaplaincy. For 50 years, it has been helping travellers in need at Schiphol. Offering a listening ear, but also practical help and guidance when necessary. The chaplaincy started at Schiphol in 1975 and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The team now consists of 3 chaplains and a large number of volunteers who manage the Meditation Centre (more about that later). Over the past decades, they have taken thousands of travellers who got stuck at Schiphol by the hand and helped them get back on their way.

Recognisable by their ‘chaplain’ lanyard

The chaplains walk through the terminal every day, you can recognise them by their lanyard with the word ‘chaplain’ on it. They speak to travellers who look sad or lost and who they suspect could use emotional support. But they also support travellers who have lost a family member abroad during their holiday. And good to know: the chaplains welcome everyone in need, whether they are religious or not. They are there for all those who require guidance.

Meditation Centre: peaceful oasis at busy Schiphol

But you don't have to wait until you meet one of the chaplains. You can also go to the Meditation Centre on the second floor of Lounge 2, which is open 24/7. It is intended as a place to pray (there is room for all faiths) or to meditate. But you can also go there if you are looking for a moment of peace in all the hustle and bustle of the airport. Employees are present during office hours. If you need it, they can offer help and call in the chaplains if necessary.

Anniversary newspaper: 50 years of Airport Chaplaincy stories

The meetings between chaplains and travellers are always special. The most memorable ones from the past 50 years have been bundled together in a special anniversary newspaper, which can be picked up at the Meditation Centre. All the stories are different, but in essence they are the same – the Airport Chaplaincy supports travellers who, for whatever reason, have a hard time at Schiphol and helps them on their way.
