The Lowest

AMS is situated 4.5 meters below sea level. Only one airport in the world is situated at a lower level: Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

The Oldest

AMS is the world’s oldest international airport that is still located at the same location where the first aircraft landed (in 1916).

Security

In 2001 AMS became the first airport in the world to facilitate border passage control by means of iris recognition.

The First

In 1957 AMS was the first airport on the European mainland to open tax free shops.

Literature

In 2010 Schiphol opened the first Airport Library in the world.

 

Art

In 2002 AMS was the world’s first airport to host a museum with paintings by old masters; Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol.
