Secure & protected area

Certain areas at the airport are off-limits to the public. These are divided into two categories: secure areas and protected areas. You will need an access pass (the ‘Schiphol Pass’) to enter these areas.

Secure
A secure area is an area, site or building that is guarded by a security company. You may only enter these areas if you have a Schiphol Pass.

Protected
Areas with a heightened level of security (‘areas restricted due to security reasons’) are protected areas. These include the lounges, the piers, and the baggage basements on airside. All these areas are protected as required by law. The Schiphol Passes that provide access to these areas are colour-coded.

Permission
Not everyone can enter the protected areas at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Only staff who need to be in a certain (protected) area of the airport for work reasons are granted permission. Their employer must be able to furnish proof of ‘functional necessity.’
