Schiphol donates 212,000 to UNICEF
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol collected 152,000 in passenger donations at the airport's collection points in 2013. The proceeds are designated to fund the work of UNICEF, the United Nations organisation that works to protect the rights of children. Employees of Schiphol Group collected an amount of 60,000 through initiatives they organised on behalf of UNICEF in that same year.
Jan Bouke Wijbrandi, General Director of UNICEF Nederland, accepted the cheques for 152,000 and 60,000 from Schiphol Group's CEO & President, Jos Nijhuis.
Jos Nijhuis, CEO & President Schiphol Group, 'A total of 212,000 was collected for UNICEF last year, an achievement to be proud of. We are immensely grateful to the passengers at Schiphol for this generous gift. And the dedication Schiphol Group staff have shown for UNICEF also makes me proud.'
Jan Bouke Wijbrandi, General Director of UNICEF Nederland : 'We are greatly appreciative of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and its passengers for this wonderful gift to help us carry out our work for children around the world. This gift will enable to us to give the world's most vulnerable children a good start in life. For example, this money will be used to purchase malaria nets for Burundi, where we are working to further reduce the number of deaths among children from malaria.'
Each year, Schiphol donates the proceeds from its collection points to a good cause that is active worldwide and has no political affiliations. The start of 2012 marked the launch of a three-year partnership between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and UNICEF Nederland. In addition to the money collected at the collection points, Schiphol Group employees organise various initiatives to support the children's rights organisation.
Active in more than 150 countries and regions, UNICEF works to ensure that all countries worldwide respect and uphold the rights of children. Its aid programmes for the provision of water, healthcare, education, food and protection help to save children's lives and overcome poverty. UNICEF provides long-term assistance. The organisation also provides relief to children in emergency situations. Guided by its mission to 'Unite for Children', the organisation partners with private parties, organisations and public bodies.
