New General Aviation Terminal at Schiphol-East

Schiphol, 17 December 2009

The General Aviation Terminal at Schiphol-East is to be replaced. Ad Rutten, Schiphol Group’s Chief Operations Officer, and André van den Berg, Director of Schiphol Real Estate, yesterday conducted the ground-breaking ceremony together with Michel Coumans, Executive Vice President, KLM Ground Services. The ceremony was attended by the construction partners and future users.

The General Aviation Terminal at Schiphol-East will serve mainly corporate and private
aviation.
KLM Jetcenter will handle some 6,000 jets here annually.
The Schiphol-East terminal is a unique location. All aviation activities took place at Schiphol-East from 1916 until the
opening of the current Schiphol-Centre in 1967.
The Schiphol-East terminal was used after 1967 for non-commercial aviation, or the general aviation sector

To be able to continue to meet client requirements and their demand for quality, Schiphol Real Estate in association with VMX Architects have created a new design for the terminal. In addition to a terminal and lounges, the building offers offices to accommodate aviation-related companies. This is in line with the development of Schiphol-East as the Schiphol
Aerospace Exchange where general aviation companies and businesses are clustered.
The building will be a sustainable development, just as all new buildings developed by Schiphol Real Estate. Sustainable features include presence-detection systems that control lighting and ventilation, additional insulation on the exterior walls, low-temperature heating, lighting control based on daylight detection as well as various energy-saving measures.

The striking design of the new General Aviation Terminal will set a new tone in the architectural landscape of Schiphol-East. The terminal’s façade consists of silver-coloured panels and an abundance of glass. The side of the building facing the platform will gain a 12-metre long magenta awning. The new facility is expected to start operating in spring 2011.
