Trend of returning passengers
In February the number of passengers that departed or arrived at Schiphol was 10% higher compared to a year ago. The trend of returning passengers has been going on for a couple of month and had an increase of 7% for December and January. The abolition of the flight tax last summer, lower airport- and parking tariffs, great prices of several airlines and the introduction of the new connections, particularly EasyJet (who is expecting 25% more passengers), have made Schiphol more attractive. This while the national airport was losing ground to international regional airports.
More passengers with Schiphol as final destination or as departure point are essential for the future of the number of destinations of the airport. Particularly the KLM network is based on transferring passengers. The number of transferring passengers in December decreased of 11.4% compared to the year before. The loss decreased from 5.5% to 0.9% in January and February, in other words the transferring passengers are slowly coming back. Thanks to the returning Dutch and the foreigners with Holland as a final destination, the number of passengers increased wit 5% in February and March.
And on top of all of this; Schiphol also became the best airport of West Europe in the World Airport Awards election and is 7th on the list of best airports of the world!
